Hi John,

Today marks the 155th anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution that guaranteed freedom, due process, and equal protection for all Americans. It was the first clear pathway for formerly enslaved Americans to see a world where they would finally be treated as equal.

As a Black, gay man with working-class roots running for Congress, this campaign represents the power and possibility of our country’s promise. Let’s face it: 155 years ago, my campaign would have been illegal and inconceivable.

We’ve made progress since then, but our struggle is far from over. The cornerstone of my campaign is ensuring ALL Americans–regardless of race–are treated equally in the eyes of the law. Too many right-wing extremists want to silence voices like mine, and I need your help fighting back. Chip in $5, or whatever you can.

The passage of the 14th Amendment didn’t come easy, nor has it fulfilled its aspirations. From segregation and Jim Crow, to the battles over voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the rights of women, our work is far from complete.

Freedom, democracy, and justice for all aren’t just pretty words written on parchment. They are calls to action. In the words of John Lewis, “Freedom is the continuous action we all must take, and each generation must do its part to create an even more fair, more just society.”

I’m running for Congress to build upon the 14th Amendment’s legacy, and continue the struggles of the many subsequent movements for justice.

We can and WILL enshrine protections for the LGBTQ+ community, codify Roe v. Wade, end racial disparities in our justice system, and create an economy that works for all of us. We just need courageous enough leaders.

We can’t go back on the progress we have made, no matter how hard Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Republicans in Congress try. We have to keep moving forward to make a real change. Chip in $5 to join me in the fight to ensure our country fulfills its promise of liberty and justice for all.
