I have a personal request to make of you today and will get to that shortly, but first I hope you’ll give me a second to explain why your support today is so important:

When I decided to run for president, many advisors tried to talk me out of it. These were some of the reasons they gave:

• My decision to step down as Vice Chair of the DNC to endorse Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in 2016 meant I’d made powerful enemies. They said Hillary Clinton would make sure my career was destroyed.
• Not enough people knew who I was, so building the fundraising power I needed to compete financially with former presidential candidates, Senators who accept PAC money, and independently wealthy candidates would be impossible.
• The corporate media would not give fair coverage to my campaign because of my focus on ending regime change wars and the new Cold War.

Well… they weren’t entirely wrong about the challenges I’d face. We’ve seen it in action.

But they were wrong that I shouldn’t try.

The reasons I decided to run are more relevant now than they’ve ever been: We need a commander in chief who has firsthand experience and knowledge of the cost of war, and who is capable of ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity for all Americans. Our people need a president who will put service above self, and people before politics.

This is my personal commitment to you, and I need your help today to make sure I can fulfill it.
