For too long, gerrymandered districts in Alabama denied Black voters the right to equal representation.
Black people make up over a quarter of Alabama’s population. But under maps passed by Alabama Republicans, only one of the state’s seven congressional districts offered majority-Black representation.

But we have good news, John: The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Allen v. Milligan struck down these maps for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. As a result, Alabama must now implement new, fair maps that include an additional majority-black district.
The Court’s decision means that, for the first time in nearly 150 years, Black Alabamans will be able to vote for the candidate of their choice in more than one congressional district. President Obama called it “An important victory for Black Alabamians and voters of color across the country.”
He’s right! Already, Louisiana lawmakers have been ordered to draw new maps with an additional majority-minority district before the next election. Similar challenges could lead to maps being redrawn in states like Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas.
The movement for fair maps helped make this happen, John. Now, we need to seize this momentum to continue working to elect leaders who will fight for fairness all across the country. Will you rush a donation to the NDR PAC now to support all our work?
