Friend,
This week, Earth set records for the warmest day in recorded history on four consecutive days, Monday through Thursday.
It was hotter than any previous day for at least the last 125,000 years.
As a career meteorologist, I’ve been discussing how climate change affects the weather for decades. I can tell you this: the record-shattering heat is a crystal clear sign of a warmer world. And its effects on human health shouldn’t be underestimated – in fact, extreme heat is statistically the deadliest weather event in the U.S., deadlier than floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes.
There’s no denying it: extreme heat will be more frequent and intense in the coming years, and we need leaders who understand solutions like more public cooling centers, green and shaded spaces, and equitable access to public pools.
A new kind of heat has arrived, and we must adapt.
Thankfully, my background enables me to communicate this issue effectively with the residents of IL-17 and the American people, and to help them prepare for the heat. But my seat is up for grabs next year, and the GOP likes their chances of flipping our district red. As I write this, far-right groups are planning to throw big money behind misleading attack ads. In other words,
the Earth is heating up, and so is this race.
So I thought I’d ask: will you help keep a trusted climate communicator in Congress by chipping in whatever you can today? Any amount will go a long way in such a close election.
