Always laser-focused on the most pressing issues of the day, Republican lawmakers have accused the "Barbie" movie of pandering to Chinese censors by apparently ceding control of the South China Sea to China in an in-movie map. In one of the funniest press releases of the year, the filmmakers pointed out that “the map in Barbie Land is a child-like crayon drawing. The doodles depict Barbie’s make-believe journey from Barbie Land to the ‘real world.’ It was not intended to make any type of statement.” Constantly seeing Chinese and LGBTQ boogeymen around every corner, it's pretty clear that it's the GOP who actually need a map out of the make-believe world that Trump locked them in. The twice-indicted, twice-impeached, disgraced ex-president got more bad news when a judge ruled that he can be sued in the wrongful termination lawsuit brought by Peter Strzok, who claims Trump got him fired after he worked on the Russia investigation with an avalanche of public attacks. The White House has signaled it will waive the law that prevents the country from selling the deadly weapons to Ukraine, to loud protest from Human Rights Watch and many prominent Democrats. Cluster munitions drop hundreds of small bomblets over a wide area, many of which fail to explode — until a civilian steps on them. Over 100 countries have signed on to a treaty banning their use due to how often they kill innocent people, but the US is not one of those countries. It is Ukraine's prerogative to use them in defense of their own territory but the consequences could be tragic.

The intense heatwaves rocking the nation have made Gov. Greg Abbott and the GOP's decision to rescind water breaks for construction workers even more appalling and inexplicable — and the city of Houston is taking legal action to make sure that workers get to do crazy things like "drink water" and "sit in the shade" while working in 100+ degree heat.

Former US officials have held secret Ukraine talks with prominent Russians
A group of ex-national security officials have been working behind the scenes with prominent Russians, including Foreign Secretary Lavrov, to try to lay the groundwork for a peaceful conclusion to the brutal war in Ukraine. Some estimates put the death toll at hundreds of thousands of people on both sides and the fighting on the ground has deteriorated into a gruesome trench warfare-style slog; any stop to the senseless bloodshed would be extremely welcome and long overdue.
