One Year Later, Honoring Highland Park With Action
“We are all Highland Park. Every American is at risk of being shot, whether we are marching in a parade, shopping at a grocery store, making a deposit at the bank, or simply walking home.”
— Brady President Kris Brown |
On July 4, Brady, in partnership with Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering, convened nearly 100 partners to sign an open letter urging Congress to ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. July 4 marked one year since seven people were gunned down at an Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, IL, and 48 others were injured. Highland Park passed a local ordinance banning assault weapons nine years ago, and since the shooting, nearby Naperville, and the state of Illinois have also passed assault weapon bans. But without federal legislation to ban these weapons of war, all of our communities are left vulnerable.
Our letter drew attention to how the Highland Park shooting was an attack on the sense of safety and freedom of all Americans, and that no community in America is safe from assault weapons without a federal ban. Brady is proud to support Highland Park and stand in solidarity with all those working to protect their community from gun violence. In honor of the lives lost, please join us in reading more about the letter and urging Congress to pass a federal assault weapons ban! |

Episode 229: Taking Steps to Show Gun Safety on Screen
Writer, producer, and director Matt Nix (True Lies, the Good Guys, Burn Notice) shares his unique perspective on Brady's Show Your Safety campaign and how Hollywood can drive change by showing gun safety on screen. We discuss how creators can encapsulate messages of responsible gun ownership within captivating (and realistic) storylines, even in content that includes a large number of firearms. Matt also shares how more folks want a John Wick gun safe than you might think, and how storytelling isn't hampered by a focus on gun safety.

Brady President Kris Brown with Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering and community members on July 4. |
“We are all Highland Park. Every American is at risk of being shot, whether we are marching in a parade, shopping at a grocery store, making a deposit at the bank, or simply walking home.
Assault weapons represent a unique threat to our communities, being designed to kill as many people as quickly as people, which is why they are the choice weapon of mass shooters. Highland Park and Illinois have taken strong steps to prevent the next mass shooting, but weak laws in other states leave us all vulnerable. Sadly, since last year’s unconscionable tragedy, our country has continued to experience nearly nonstop mass shootings with assault weapons.
Congress has a duty to protect the safety, health, and well-being of Americans. We must put a stop to the fear of losing our lives, our loved ones, and our fellow Americans and reauthorize the federal assault weapons ban. Our freedom — the soul of our nation — requires it.”
