John,
1.6 million for killing a child.
A French policeman just murdered Nahel, a 17 year-old Arab boy in Paris, shooting him point blank.
So a right-wing politician decided to reward the policeman by launching a crowdfunding campaign in his honour. And supporters have donated 1.6 million.
1.6 million for killing a child.
People in France and around the world are outraged, and demanding that GoFundMe, the site hosting the crowdfunder, take it down immediately. Let's add our names to this call in honour of Nahel, and to ensure that police brutality doesn't pay:
Tell GoFundMe CEO, Tim Cadogan: cancel this despicable campaign
Nahel was 17 years old. An only child. His mother Mounia lovingly raised him in a deprived area of Paris’ suburbs. Nahel was also a keen rugby player and a fellow of the Oval Citizen association, where he was studying trade.
Behind this name and this video, which has traveled around the world and leaves no room for doubt, there is a child. With his dreams, his fears, his failures and his victories.
GoFundMe believes that the fundraising campaign "complies with its rules" because it would support the policeman's family. But this is FALSE: the phrase "support him" (i.e. the policeman) appears very clearly in the caption.
The GoFundMe fund's message even states that the policeman, who is being held on a charge of culpable homicide, was only "doing his job". Killing a child?
There's no excuse for murdering a child, so how can it be even rewarded?
John, tell Tim Cadogan to cancel this indecent fund.
Another platform, Leetchi, where the fund was initially launched, suspended it after just 20 minutes.
The very legality of the fund raises questions, especially given that the French courts have ruled in Leetchi’s favour when it canceled a fund in support of a Yellow Vest protestor charged with fighting.
If according to these platforms and the courts, a person can't be supported financially for getting into a fight, how can they be supported for murder?
Tell GoFundMe CEO to show some decency and cancel this fund of shame.
Justice for Nahel.
