On the cusp of history in Iowa:

Matt McCoy

John,

Iowans are pretty used to making LGBTQ history. After all, we were one of the first states to legalize marriage equality, before the Supreme Court handed down their landmark ruling. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity has been outlawed for over ten years. We were the first state to fly a trans flag above the Capital in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

I even made a piece of LGBTQ history myself: In 1992, I became the first openly LGBTQ person elected to the Iowa state legislature. As I was alone in the General Assembly, I knew the responsibility of representing and protecting Iowa’s LGBTQ community rested with me.

That’s a heavy burden that now Pete Buttigieg – and all of Victory Fund’s candidates – instinctively understand, and one of the many reasons I gladly endorsed Pete. But no one should have to govern alone. Chip in today to elect Pete and other historic LGBTQ candidates nationwide.

It’s tough to be the only LGBTQ voice in the room, but we must keep speaking up. During my time in the Assembly, I was able to update HIV and contagious diseases transmission legislation and correct previously unjust laws. During his run, we’ve heard Pete speak about LGBTQ issues on the debate stage, tell his coming out story, and lead the field in proposing LGBTQ equality legislation, while advocating for LGBTQ voices in government.

Pete’s been barnstorming Iowa, meeting his future constituents and hearing their concerns. I’ve been doing the same for him! And while I can’t predict what will happen on Caucus night, I’m confident Iowans are going to nominate the first openly LGBTQ President in American history. And it is because of supporters like you.

Contribute today to elect more historic LGBTQ candidates who can move equality forward for our community.

Thanks again for supporting Victory Fund.

Sincerely,

Matt McCoy Signature

LGBTQ Victory Fund has helped thousands of openly LGBTQ candidates win elections up and down the ballot, from sea to shining sea since our founding in 1991. We believe representation is power – so we elected U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin and Kyrsten Sinema, Governors Jared Polis and Kate Brown, all seven LGBTQ members of U.S. Congress and countless candidates for state and local government, including Virginia Delegate Danica Roem, Colorado state Representative Leslie Herod and Pennsylvania Assemblymember Brian Sims. And with an unprecedented number of LGBTQ people running for office in this year, we’ll need your support to make 2020 the next Rainbow Wave.
