Ohio Governor Mike DeWine requested that President Joseph R. Biden issue a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration [ [link removed] ] relating to the Norfolk Southern train derailment and release of hazardous chemicals that occurred in East Palestine. Today was the deadline set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency following a previous extension request.
"The possibility remains that the voluntary support provided by Norfolk Southern could at some point in the future cease, and this Declaration is needed to ensure that the State and Federal government use all resources available to step in and provide the community with needed assistance." DeWine stated in his letter to President Biden.

Governor DeWine signs budget into law
In the early hours of July 4, Governor DeWine signed Ohio's operating budget bill for fiscal years 2024 and 2025 into law.
House Bill 33 [ [link removed] ] supports the priorities of the DeWine-Husted administration by taking advantage of Ohio's time in history to make strategic investments in our thriving economy, communities, and families in a manner that positions Ohio for continued success in the future.
?I am proud to sign this budget, and while it makes historic investments in Ohioans across their lives, I believe we are doing more to support and encourage Ohio?s children to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives than ever before,? said Governor DeWine. ?Whether it is helping them get the healthiest start in life by providing top-notch health care for moms; to expanding access to quality early childhood education; to ensuring their teachers have the resources and skills needed to teach students how to read in the way their brains learn to read; to providing prevention and early intervention tools for those struggling with mental and behavioral health issues; to expanding access and opportunity for all types of training, certifications, and degrees after high school graduation, and continued career development; through ensuring Ohioans have a high quality of life and the highest quality of care as they age, this budget helps make Ohio the heart of opportunity for everyone.?

2023 Independence Day
On Tuesday, Governor DeWine celebrated Independence Day. In 2022, Governor DeWine announced the creation of the Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial [ [link removed] ] to help plan America?s 250th birthday celebration in Ohio in 2026.

Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted discussed budget details
Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted discussed a number of priority items in the new operating budget [ [link removed] ]?for fiscal years 2024-2025 that will support Ohio's workforce, children, and communities.?
"This budget is one that makes historic investments in Ohioans and builds on Ohio?s momentum," said Governor DeWine.? "We are building on our efforts to make sure Ohio continues to be the heart of it all -- the best place to live, work, raise a family, and start a business."
?If you provide people the chance to access an education and earn job skills, you have good jobs available for them and you stay focused on making sure that you continue to innovate the state for the future, you are giving people the ability to live their version of the American dream,? said Lt. Round 2 of Ohio Arts economic relief grant program
Governor DeWine, Lt. Governor Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced the state will award more than $20 million in grants to support 104 arts-based organizations in 33 counties.? [ [link removed] ]?
?Ohio artists and arts organizations make our state an attractive place to live, work, and raise a family,? said Governor DeWine.? ?Ohio is the heart of it all ? and by supporting the arts, we continue to ensure artistic excellence.?
?Through these grants, we?re promoting creativity and quality of life,? said Lt. Governor Husted. ?These resources help people take pride in their local communities and create places where people want to live, work and play.?

988 press conference
Governor DeWine, joined by Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Director Lori Criss, and Ohio 988 Administrator Doug Jackson, recognized the positive impact of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has had on Ohioans following one year of state-and nationwide implementation. [ [link removed] ]The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides Ohioans with one, easy to remember number to call ? 988 ? when they or someone they know is in crisis.
?We are working to strengthen and expand Ohio?s crisis care system to help anyone who is in a mental health or addiction crisis ? and their family members ? quickly connect to help close to home,? said Governor DeWine. ?The 988 lifeline is a 24/7 resource for Ohioans, and it is saving lives.?

Governor DeWine signed Senate Bill 16 [ [link removed] ], sponsored by Senator Steve Wilson (R-Maineville). The bill alters the law governing immunity from liability for donations of perishable food, to make changes relative to the rights of crime victims, and to declare an emergency.
