Creating a Strong Workforce

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of visiting the main campus of Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. Founded in 1968, this public community college is an enduring institution in the area, providing education and training to almost 5,000 students, hailing from East Texas.

ImageThe college is under the capable leadership of Dr. Michael Simon, who was appointed as the third president of the institution in August 2015. With his vast experience Dr. Simon ensures Angelina College’s operations across the region are dedicated to preparing graduates for successful entry into the workforce.

For those pursuing technical training, Angelina College offers programs aligned with their overarching dedication to preparing students for in-demand skilled positions within their communities. I was excited to learn of AC’s collaboration with Lockheed Martin, a national aerospace company. This partnership has culminated in a state-of-the-art manufacturing skills training lab on campus, a testament to the college's commitment to developing highly skilled talents for our workforce. These collaborations also extend to local businesses, fostering economic development in the East Texas Region.
I eagerly look forward to engaging more with Angelina College and its training centers to facilitate this growth further. I am proud to represent them in Congress.

Reliable Energy for East Texas

Thursday morning, I toured the Limestone Electric Generating Station, outside of Jewett. This impressive facility generates reliable energy for the region through its two-unit system. I met with plant leadership and employees to understand the work that it takes to keep this facility running.

ImageEnergy independence and responsible employment of domestic resources is critical to Texas and our nation at-large. It’s been said before, but energy security is national security. Domestic energy production is an essential element of our nation’s self-reliance. This 3,800-acre site on the border of Leon and Limestone Counties is capable of supplying over 1.3 million homes with power and is a prime example of the benefits brought by reliable domestic energy sources. Additionally, the power plant is supporting community growth by providing steady employment opportunities.

Congressional Veterans Commendation

The 17th Congressional District of Texas is fortunate to have a substantial and involved veteran community. After fulfilling their responsibilities in the armed services, many veterans return home to be pillars of our community, through their continued dedication to service and sacrifice. Their engagement and stewardship exerts a lasting positive influence on friends, family, and loved ones.

In recognition of their invaluable contributions, I am requesting nominations for the Congressional Veterans Commendation (CVC). The CVC is a unique distinction that honors those who have courageously served our nation, during both war and peacetime. This year, I will confer the commendations to the chosen awardees at a special ceremony.

Please note that nominees should have received an honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces and must have served either as active-duty personnel or as a reservist called to duty. The deadline for submissions is July 21, 2023. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to hear about deserving veterans in the 17th District.
