PROGRAM UPDATES:
Water Drop:

This week we had a visit from Lutheran Retreats, Camps and Conferences of El Camino Pines & Luther Glen Farm. This group of 10 individuals joined our Educational Programs Coordinator Ana, on a Water Drop to leave gallons of water, canned food, electrolytes, cooling towels and messages of love for migrants crossing through the extreme dessert heat. With temperatures climbing over the 100s this weekend, these life-saving supplies become critical along migrant routes.

If your school/group/organization would like to join us or find out what other educational opportunities are available please email us at [email protected] today!

Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming Water Drop in July! Sign-up link will be provided on our bio and our newsletter soon!

A big shoutout to PRIME-LC from UC Irvine (Program In Medical Education For The Latino Community) for joining us on an educational water drop this weekend. UCI is one of our longest standing partnerships, and we thank them for joining us as we braced a heat wave to leave gallons of water, canned food, electrolytes, cooling towels and messages of love for migrants crossing through the extreme dessert heat.

This group was especially attentive and caring not only to each other’s safety but to the information we shared, as many of the students had a personal connection to immigration and many of them shared the need to have a sense of understanding for what a migrant crossing might/could face. Seeing how passionate these students were, and even how a couple of them shared how they wanted to be able to provide support to any future patients who could have crossed, really reminds us of the importance of this life-saving work.

Ms. Dani and High Tech High

We want to give a shout to High Tech High’s 10th grade Spanish teacher Daniela Guevara and her amazing class. When teaching her kids about migration she spoke of the needs of migrants and asylum seekers happening here at the border, they collected donations like water, high-protein pop top canned food, hygiene products, etc.

Her students also donated hats, and took it upon themselves to hand-embroider loving messages. We are so moved every time we meet supporters and get to know their stories, and we are extremely hopeful for this next generation of compassionate and loving humans thanks to people like Ms. Dani!

A 9-year-old migrant died after having seizures during scorching trek in Arizona
A 9-year-old migrant died from medical complications which included seizures after crossing into the US along the Arizona border in the midst of sweltering summer heat, Border Patrol officials said.

The young boy was traveling with his mother and brother on June 15 when he began experiencing seizures, US Customs and Border Protection said in a news release on Friday. The high temperature on June 15 was nearly 100 degrees in the area, according to CNN Weather.

The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office received a 911 distress call from the mother who was sent over to the Border Patrol Tucson Sector around 9:40 p.m., according to the release. A National Guard Air Unit located the family and GPS coordinates were given to the local area fire department emergency medical services, the release said.

Triple-digit heat continues to scorch parts of the U.S.
A dangerous heat wave is baking much of the United States for yet another day, as states in the South and areas out West prepare for a scorching Fourth of July holiday.

High heat and humidity has blanketed the South for days after a heat dome that parked over Texas for three weeks expanded into neighboring regions. Meanwhile in the interior of California and parts of the Southwest, temperatures spiked over the weekend and triple-digit conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The overlapping and unrelenting heat waves across the southern part of the country are the kinds of extreme heat events that climate scientists say will be more common in a warming world. Studies have shown that climate change is making heat waves more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting.
