John,
First, I want to thank this incredible team for rallying together for the big June FEC deadline. I hope you and your family had a restful and safe holiday celebrating our nation’s independence.
On the Fourth of July, we celebrate our nation’s founding ideals of freedom and equality. Yet last week, we saw three major Supreme Court decisions that are wildly out of touch with our country’s values.
First, the Supreme Court dismantled affirmative action, a decision that undermines our nation’s progress toward racial equality and dismisses the lived experiences of students of color. As Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in her dissent, “deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life.”
Then, the Court blocked student loan forgiveness, a decision that will especially hurt low- and middle-income borrowers and communities of color, and that squashed an opportunity to ease their path toward economic mobility.
Finally, the Court ended Pride Month by opening the door for businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. At a time when LGBTQ+ Americans, especially transgender youth, are the target of hateful attacks and state legislation, the Court just issued a license to discriminate.
These decisions erode the freedoms we celebrated this week. But our fight to guarantee freedom and equality for every American is far from over.
As Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I’m working to confirm federal judges who reflect the diversity of this country and will uphold our values. With your support, I’m also committed to doing everything I can to re-elect a Democratic Senate majority in 2024 that will defend individual freedom.
Once again, I want to send my sincere gratitude to each of you on this grassroots team. I know I can count on you when it matters most — and for that, I can’t thank you enough.
My best,
Dick Durbin
