John - This month, as we celebrate Pride, we also remember the 49 lives cut short in the horrific Pulse nightclub shooting seven years ago today. This act of violence targeting the LGBTQ+ community was fueled by the hateful rhetoric of GOP extremists that continues to threaten Americans today.

The last time I was in Orlando, I visited the memorial at Pulse nightclub and I was moved by the resilience and unity I witnessed there in the face of bigotry.

I’m running for Congress to stand against intolerance and hate and to advocate for gun safety – because every American deserves the chance to thrive and live free from fear of violence. Unfortunately, the interaction between discrimination and prejudice towards the LGBTQ+ community and gun violence is deadly: LGBTQ+ people are twice as likely to be victims of gun violence as their cisgender and straight peers.

June is both Pride Month and National Gun Violence Awareness Month. At a time when trans rights are under attack across the country, we must have leaders committed to both defending LGBTQ+ rights and ending gun violence.

As a trauma surgeon, I’ve told too many mothers and fathers that their children had died due to gun violence. No parent should ever have to hear those words. That’s why I’m committed to advocating for meaningful gun safety reform as a representative in Congress.

Last week, I sent you a petition asking you to stand with me in demanding action from our leaders. We need to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation to prevent another massacre like the one at Pulse nightclub. Today we commemorate lives lost, and take action to ensure that history will not repeat itself.

If you haven’t already signed, will you please take a moment to add your name to our petition calling on leaders in Washington to act to prevent gun violence today?
