Recently, I introduced H.R. 4240, the Saving Lives in Schools Act, to help stop the scourge of fentanyl poisonings and drug overdoses in our society today. Illicit fentanyl is one of the greatest threats we face as a nation. We are losing more Americans every year to fentanyl poisonings than we lost during the entire Vietnam War.
Every day, almost two hundred Americans lose their lives to fentanyl poisoning, and it is now the number one cause of death for people aged 18-49. If a plane crashed every day, we would ground every flight until we solved the issue. Included in that number is a family from our district, who lost their son to this drug at only 22 years old. His mother wrote, “My son was a victim of drug-induced homicide. He took one pill that ended up being pure fentanyl and died. He was poisoned because he trusted the wrong person and paid for it with his life.”
According to Customs and Border Protection, since January of2021, there have been over 5.2 million illegal crossings of our southern border and there is now enough fentanyl in our country to kill every single American. Congress cannot continue to allow lawlessness and tragedy to continue to tear our communities apart.
That is why I introduced the Saving Lives in Schools Act. With millions of Americans affected by President Biden’s border policies, it is vital that we get the resources to the places where they are needed most. H.R. 4240 does just that. This bill will make sure that schools have readily accessible for students and teachers, just like defibrillators.
I carry around Narcan with me in my backpack. I have never had to use it, and God willing, I won't have to. It is time we have these life-saving measures in our schools. Let's pass the Saving Lives in Schools Act, secure the southern border, and save lives.
Thank you, and God Bless the United States of America!
