J.D. wanted to work as a professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz but was shocked to learn that the university required a statement detailing his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion before he would even be considered.

PLF’s lawsuit “is the first major free-speech challenge to a public institution that requires these statements. If Haltigan prevails, state institutions may be unable to mandate diversity statements in the future, or may find themselves constrained in how they solicit or assess such statements."
