🌹RTW BALLOT SUBMISSION DEADLINES EXPLAINED🌹

You may have seen the deadlines for signature gathering for Raise the Wage Renton changing around in the past few weeks. We know this has been confusing – we’d like to clarify what’s going on right now:

Our deadline to submit signatures to get on the November ballot was Thursday, July 6. Once we submit these signatures, a few things will happen:

  • King County Elections validates the signatures that are submitted and issues a notice of sufficiency if there are enough valid signatures (8,914). This process takes about two weeks.
  • The signatures are sent back to the City Council, who then places the measure on a ballot. This needs to happen by August 1st.

Our fingers are crossed that in a few weeks we will hear the news that we got 8,914 signatures and we’re on the November ballot – given the big turnout to gather signatures in the last few weeks, this is a real possibility! However, it is far from a sure thing.

Should we get the news that we do not have enough valid signatures, though, all is not lost. We can still submit a petition for the February special election. Even if we don’t have enough signatures for November, we’ll still have a solid chance at reaching our total. Any signatures we collect after July 6th will be CRUCIAL in getting us over the finish line for a February submission.

There’s nothing stopping us from gathering signatures between now and when we find out whether or not we have enough signatures, which is why we plan on CONTINUING TO GATHER SIGNATURES UNTIL WE HEAR BACK FROM THE KC ELECTIONS LATER THIS MONTH!

If we find out in a few weeks that we already had enough signatures by July 6 and that we didn’t need to get more signatures, we will still have had valuable conversations about RTWR with hundreds of voters! If we find out that we didn’t have enough signatures by July 6, we will be REALLY HAPPY that we acted like the Tortoise, diligently chipping away at our goal, and not the Hare, taking a nap right near the finish line! LET’S KEEP UP THE ENERGY FOR A FEW MORE WEEKS!

One last thing, UPS workers voted by 97% to authorize a strike on August 1st, if they are unable to win a strong contract.  With 340,000 workers, its the largest private sector union at a single company in the country. If they strike, it would be the  largest single-company strike in U.S. history.
