4th of July Recap, NEW Food Drive & Call to Action

A huge thank you to the many volunteers that helped make the Fourth of July parade and tabling event in Sebastian a wonderful success. In total, 16 proud Indian River Democrats marched alongside two decorated vehicles waving flags and carrying signs made by Cate Wenzing. We also had a tent in the park for community members to sign petitions, register to vote, volunteer for future events and hold great conversations. This event would not have been possible without all of those who stepped up to help and our Vice Chair of Outreach, Bob Bruner. Thank you!
Our next opportunity to make a difference in our community is our July Food Drive for the United Against Poverty emergency food pantry. Thank you to Caryl Zook for bringing this need to our attention and to Bonnie Shelton for organizing the details of the drive for our newsletter. You can drop off donations during the entire month of July.

This week has been a stark reminder of America's gun violence crisis. Just one day before the one year remembrance of the Highland Park 4th of July parade assault rifle massacre that took 7 lives and wounded 48 parade attendees, a gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with multiple magazines, an assault rifle and a handgun opened fire in a Philadelphia neighborhood indiscriminately killing five people and wounding two children ages two and thirteen.
A bill to freeze manufacturing of the weapons used in both shootings has been introduced to Congress. Our U.S. House Representative, Bill Posey, has not supported the bill and neither have our two Senators, Marco Rubio and Rick Scott.
The gun violence prevention organization, Change the Ref ([link removed]) , unveiled a stunning campaign aimed at calling out our lawmakers' inaction to prevent the next mass shooting.
WATCH the video visualizing the consequences of voting for the wrong candidate, then call your members of Congress and tell them you are their constituent and you want them to cosponsor the Assault Weapons Ban.
