[ [link removed]- ]Ilhan for Congress
I am horrified by the latest Israeli military operation — their largest in the occupied West Bank in decades — which took the lives of 12 Palestinians in Jenin this week.
This incursion comes at a time of massive settlement expansion and de-facto annexation of the West Bank by the most right-wing government in Israeli history, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is now openly promising to "crush" Palestinian hopes for statehood.
As someone who has experienced the trauma of war, displacement, and living in a refugee camp firsthand, my heart is broken to know that millions of Palestinians continue suffering never-ending brutalization without care or concern from leaders across the world.
Let me be clear: every single death in this conflict is a tragedy. I wish that we as a nation would treat the pain, suffering, and anguish caused by it equally. But the fact is that we do not.
We must ask ourselves: how long will the United States continue to fund Netanyahu's human rights abuses with zero strings attached?
How long will we allow him to commit these crimes with no consequences?
How long can our country continue to pay lip service to peace and justice, while the Israeli government we provide with billions of dollars in weapons, bombs, and military aid makes it impossible?
Truly putting human rights at the center of our foreign policy means demanding accountability — whether they are our allies or adversaries.
I promise you that as a Member of Congress, a progressive, a mother, a refugee, a woman, a Muslim, and as a human being, that is what I will always do.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
