The latest on Julie Su’s Nomination and the PRO Act
Friend,
Julie Su’s nomination as Biden’s secretary of Labor poses a risk for all independent contractors, freelancers, gig workers, and side hustlers.
Before Su assumed the position of acting Labor secretary in May, she held the positions of under secretary of Labor and before that secretary for the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency. During her time in Cali, she implemented the anti-free, anti-flexible law that destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of freelance and independent workers: California Assembly Bill 5… better known as AB5.
Julie Su has proved herself unfriendly to our nation's rapidly growing freelance workforce that now accounts for over 74 million workers. Though she has repeatedly attempted to distance herself from her AB5 past, it still nips at her heels.
Friend, are you an independent worker? Do you love the freedom and flexibility to set your own schedule and the independence to determine work based on what fits your lifestyle best? We want to hear from you!

Independent Women’s Forum has been talking to workers across the country about what they love about their work arrangements — like greater control of schedules and the freedom to develop a relationship with more than one company. It’s the personal stories of people like you that need to be heard to ensure whoever is tapped to run the U.S. Department of Labor best represents all workers and protects our flexibility, freedom, and livelihoods.
The good news is that several moderate Congressional democrats have expressed their concern over Su’s nomination. For example, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has asked the Biden administration to find another nominee to head its Labor Department. Hint: She isn’t good for America’s workforce!
Should Su get confirmed, she will support the passage of the PRO Act, otherwise known as the Protect the Right to Organize Act ([link removed]) , which will impose severe restrictions on independent and freelance workers.
The PRO Act is anti-woman and anti-worker. By implementing AB5-style restrictions on independent contractors, the PRO Act will spread California-level hardship to the rest of the country.
SHARE YOUR WORK STORY ([link removed])
Julie Su has proven her favor toward large unions and her opposition toward all workers. This is obvious in her past and her present actions.
There are actions you can take to start pressuring the brakes on big unions and protect the liberties and freedoms of independent contracting and freelance work.
We Want to Hear from YOU:
SHARE YOUR WORK STORY ([link removed])
Being able to share a vast number of American workers’ stories that participate in the freelance workforce is critical to stop those who want to restrict the freedom and flexibility we value. And it starts with one story: YOURS.
Sincerely,
Patrice Onwuka
