Millions of Americans rely on Social Security every day to meet their basic needs. It’s a promise we made to our seniors who deserve to retire with dignity, to people with disabilities, and to surviving spouses.

And yet that guarantee is under relentless attack.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has announced that he’s forming a “bipartisan” commission to cut Social Security. But his commission is only bipartisan if Democrats join him.

Throughout Republicans’ debt ceiling hostage taking, they claimed they didn’t want to touch Social Security or Medicare. And yet, as soon as President Biden and Kevin McCarthy struck a deal, McCarthy showed his true colors, telling Fox News:¹

“This isn’t the end…I’m going to announce a commission. We have to look at the entire budget. The President walled off all the others. The majority driver of the budget is mandatory spending. It’s Medicare, Social Security, interest on the debt.”

However, McCarthy understands that in order to not be blamed by voters for cutting our earned benefits, he needs Democrats to join him.

Instead of cutting Social Security, we should be expanding benefits. That’s why I support the Social Security 2100 Act, which would help millions of current and future beneficiaries by increasing benefits across the board, improving Cost-of-Living Adjustments, increasing the special minimum benefit for low-wage workers, ending the five-month waiting period to receive disability benefits, and more. And, it’ll be paid for by lifting the payroll tax cap, ensuring everyone earning over $400,000 is paying more of their fair share.
