Social Needs of MA Enrollees

Little is known about the health-related social needs (HRSNs) of those who are Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollees, especially those who are dually eligible for Medicaid and Medicare and those younger than sixty-five.

Deborah Peikes and her team of colleagues address this gap by exploring the HSRNs of those enrolled in a large national MA plan.

After evaluating survey results, they find that dual-eligible beneficiaries in the survey sample had a higher prevalence of each HRSNs than non-dual-eligible beneficiaries. Also, "among dual-eligible beneficiaries, the most common HRSN profiles were financial strain and food insecurity."

Peikes and colleagues also determine that HRSNs varied according to respondent characteristics, but less so among dual-eligible beneficiaries.
