Hi there --
Yesterday, Meta launched a new app called Threads, a text-based social media platform to rival Twitter. [1]
That’s right – Meta, the same company that has fueled the spread of disinformation, extremism, discrimination, and violence around the world, is now launching another social media platform. Although their current platforms have played a “determining role” in a genocide and incited insurrections against democratically elected governments – not to mention connecting vast pedophile networks as recently as last month – Meta is now launching a new social media platform. [2] [3] [4]
And to no one’s surprise, just like their other platforms, Threads will collect massive amounts of data about you, including location data, purchases, and browsing history. [5] As one example of its shortcomings, their policies for the new platform link to those for Instagram, whose community guidelines do not explicitly prohibit election disinformation. [6]
Friend, Meta cares more about competing with Twitter than our safety. Add your name: Tell Meta to implement guardrails to keep the new platform safe for users.

In response to the launch of Threads, Accountable Tech joined forces with our co-leaders from the Stop Toxic Twitter campaign to call on Meta to implement three guardrails for the platform:
- Immediately implement robust policies to keep violence and hate off Threads from the start.
- Invest in protections against algorithmic manipulation and in support of equitable policy enforcement across languages.
- Engage transparently with civil society organizations and provide access to data to researchers.
For the safety of users, Meta must implement guardrails that stem extremism, hate, and anti-democratic lies. Add your name and urge Meta to put user safety over profits.
Elon Musk's degradation of Twitter has lowered the bar for everyone, but that doesn’t mean we’ll let Meta off the hook here. Together, we won't stop fighting for the accountability of these tech giants.
Let’s keep up the fight,
