On April 4, 2023, Egale submitted an open letter to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on Fox News being in clear violation of Canadian broadcasting standards – as Fox News incites hate, violence, and discrimination in its programming against 2SLGBTQI people and other equity-deserving communities. In response, the CRTC opened a Part 1 Application (2023-0210-8 – Egale Canada) for the removal of Fox News from the list of non-Canadian programming services authorized for distribution. Beginning on May 4, the CRTC opened a four-week consultation with over 7,000 individuals and civil society organizations making submissions to the CRTC. Egale filed a detailed reply. The CRTC is now weighing all the evidence provided and will come to a decision on the future of Fox News airing in Canada. Let’s be clear, Egale’s call for the removal of Fox News from Canadian distribution is not about censorship. It’s about preventing Fox News from inciting hate, violence, and discrimination against 2SLGBTQI people and other equity-deserving communities in Canada. There is an unacceptable and growing reactionary movement in Canada threatening the safety, freedoms, and rights of 2SLGBTQI people, especially those who are Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming (2STNBGN). In the past few weeks alone, we have seen a hate-motivated stabbing in a Gender Studies class at the University of Waterloo, transphobic attacks against children, protests over drag story time events, and inclusive education policies being rolled back in New Brunswick. |
