Friend,
We’re only a month into 2020, and already we’ve passed a bill and multiple amendments to help people fight discrimination, clean up communities, and overcome barriers to economic justice. This is what progress looks like!
We’re hard at work, turning bold ideas into action to transform people’s lives and bring about justice for all. But none of this progress can happen without you.
Please chip in $5 or more today—before our end-of-month fundraising deadline.
Just passed in the House yesterday, the Restoring Unfairly Impaired Credit & Protecting Consumers Act will open doors to economic opportunities for millions of Americans, by:
-
Shortening the length of time for bad marks on your credit report from 7 years to 4 years.
-
Helping us stop fraudulent schemes from affecting your credit report.
-
Preventing medically necessary debt from being reported on your credit report.
-
Enabling survivors of domestic and financial abuse to remove abuse-related debt from credit reports.
Here are a few other things we’ve accomplished so far in 2020:
We declared housing a human right! I joined grassroots groups and other progressive U.S. Representatives to launch the People’s Housing Platform this week, a groundbreaking set of policies that lays out a plan for how we can house everyone who lives in this country.
(One piece of the plan that’s near to my heart: repealing fake “opportunity zones,” which were originally created to help people but have been misused by billionaires to take our public dollars so they can profit while pushing out our neighbors. We can take back $10 billion from wealthy developers and use that to expand housing counseling, invest in community land trusts, elevate the challenges renters face, and so much more. I look forward to sharing more with you soon!)
We passed an important amendment to the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act, to protect federal employes from age discrimination.
We also passed an amendment to the PFAS Action Act, to ensure that funding and resources for toxic PFAS cleanup go first to the most-impacted frontline communities. This is an important step toward investing in and healing marginalized communities across the country, including Michigan’s #13thDistrictStrong.
We successfully pushed Michigan’s environmental regulation agency to demand that Fiat Chrysler, a multi-billion-dollar corporate polluter, do more to protect public health and to address residents’ air quality concerns. Hand-in-hand with local lawmakers and neighborhood residents, we’ve rallied to push Fiat Chrysler to do better because our community deserves better. Because we deserve to breathe clean air.
We hosted our first coffee hour of 2020, a packed event where neighbors in Michigan's 13th congressional district came together to talk about what matters most to them.
We also held the Trump administration accountable: We demanded that U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stop collecting DNA from detained immigrants, including in Detroit, and we requested EPA investigations of hazardous sites in #13thDistrictStrong.
And we launched a campaign for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020!
As I mentioned in last week’s announcement (check out the video above), you and all of the residents of Michigan’s 13th congressional district are central to the work that I do, in Washington, D.C. and back at home.
I’m honored to represent #13thDistrictStrong’s resilient residents—true heroes who have fought corporate polluters and structural racism for decades, and who deserve bold leadership at all levels of government.
All of this critical work that we’re accomplishing together is thanks to your input and your support.
Please donate $5 or more today to help fight for democracy and justice, as we demand to be seen, to be heard, and to be at the table shaping policy.
Thank you for all you do!
Always serving you,
Rashida
