Trump hurls astounding "crackhead" accusation at special counsel Jack Smith
We can now add "call the prosecutor a crackhead" to Donald Trump's increasingly lengthy list of dubious legal strategies, other highlights of which include "the FBI planted the documents," "I declassified them with my mind," "I would never rape her, she's not my type," and "I was just lying to look cool." We're sure this latest masterstroke will land with equal aplomb.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Jack Smith makes aggressive new move against Trump in federal case
The special counsel's probe has turned its eye to Arizona, where the disgraced ex-president tried to get then-Gov. Doug Ducey to overturn the election in 2020 with the help of former Vice President Mike Pence. If he's looking for evidence of Trump's heinous scheme to destroy American democracy, Smith is likely to find it in Arizona, a hotbed of election-denial conspiracy.
Take Action: Endorse progressive champion Qasim Rashid for Congress!

Qasim Rashid is the progressive champion we need to stop the GOP attacks on our rights
Qasim Rashid for Congress As Republicans wage war on the rights of women, trans people, Black voters, even our children, it's more important than ever we flip the House in 2024 — and nobody is more prepared to take on the GOP than Qasim Rashid, who has fought for justice his entire career as a human rights lawyer. Will you chip in to send Qasim to Congress and keep the GOP from turning the clock back to 1865?
Tony Evers extends school funding increase by 400 years
Midwest Democrats continue to put on a masterclass in what governing as a progressive should look like; this time, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers used One Weird Trick to entrench a $325-per-student annual funding increase for public schools for the next 400 years by changing the phrase "2023-2024 and 2025 school years" to "2023-2425 school years." This is a colossal win for Wisconsin's children and a reminder that Democrats should be removing sunset clauses and expirations from EVERYTHING they pass in order to keep GOP budget-cutters from getting their grubby hands on our most important social programs.
Take Action: Tell Congress to end hunger and expand food access!
Heavily armed insurrectionist targeted Obamas' DC home after Trump shared address with online followers
Taylor Taranto, who prosecutors say participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, drove a van loaded with firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition cross-country and was arrested near the Obamas' DC residence the same day Donald Trump doxxed his predecessor. Taranto documented his remarkably stupid quest online, telling followers he was looking to get "a good angle on a shot" and claiming "We got these losers surrounded! See you in hell, Podesta’s and Obama’s.” [sic] before being apprehended by Secret Service agents swarming the area.
Take Action: Protect LGBT+ rights and pass the Equality Act!
Teen dies after industrial accident at sawmill
Just months into America's new dalliance with child labor and already we have our first tragic fatality. A 16-year-old boy was killed in an accident at a Florence, Wisconsin, sawmill, prompting an immediate investigation by OSHA for child labor law violations. No telling whether or not this will have any effect on the state GOP's efforts to join the right-wing march to roll back child labor laws, but seeing as Republicans don't care much for anything other than profits for their corporate donors, we're gonna go with a strong "probably not."

Moms for Liberty speaker says it's time to start re-reading Hitler, other dictators
The notorious anti-LGBTQ hate group is proving their derogatory nickname of "Klanned Karenhood" is well earned with a *second* Hitler scandal in two weeks. This time, North Carolina Lt. Gov Mark Robinson defended the group's use of a Hitler quote in their newsletter by arguing that we SHOULD be re-reading the quotes of Hitler and other dictators...while speaking at a PRAYER BREAKFAST hosted by the Moms for Liberty. What a coincidence that the biggest billionaire-funded parental group in the country is openly espousing fascist ideas!

Fox News host blasts her fellow anchors for "tasteless" comments about Hunter Biden and cocaine found at the White House
In a rare flicker of humanity, host Cheryl Casone took to the Fox airwaves to complain about all the jokes conservatives — including her colleagues — have been making about the cocaine baggie found in the visitor's section of the White House. "I think that there’s a lot of cheap shots taken at Hunter Biden...He is a recovering addict. Nobody wants to see him regress or slip back into addiction. And I think the comments were tasteless.” While nobody is surprised to hear that the chittering jackals that dominate Fox 24/7 would mock the president's son for his well-documented, debilitating battle with drug addiction, it IS surprising to hear anyone at Fox push back against the network's incessant avalanche of cheap cruelty.
The far-right is using the Philadelphia mass shooting to smear trans people
Without any evidence, Marjorie Taylor Greene labeled the perpetrator of the mass shooting in Philadelphia a "trans shooter" based on the fact that he apparently wore a dress in a picture posted to social media accounts. For some reason, Greene failed to mention the fervent support the shooter also showed for Donald Trump and the 2nd Amendment during her pathetic attempt to further smear the LGBTQ community.
Maternal death in the US doubled over the past 20 years
While the rest of the world's maternity death rate dropped, the maternal mortality rate in the United States — the richest country in the world — doubled over the past 20 years, with the brunt of the deaths falling on the indigenous and Black communities in the South. With the fall of Roe v. Wade, you can bet those numbers are going to go even higher.
Meta takes dead aim at Twitter with launch of rival app, Threads
It's not quite the steel-cage match we were teased with last week, but Mark Zuckerberg officially put Elon Musk on notice with Threads, a new social media platform designed to challenge Twitter head on. More than 10 million subscribers reportedly joined in the first seven hours. Your move, Elon!

Today’s Action: Support the Writers Guild of America strike!
The writers of all our favorite TV and streaming shows have been on strike for more than two months, with no signs of an equitable deal or compromise from Hollywood executives. While the advent of streaming has unleashed a torrent of wonderful, high-quality entertainment, it has proven financially calamitous for writers, who have found themselves working for less and less pay year after year. Adjusted for inflation, writer pay has dropped 14% over the past five years! On top of that, their jobs (and the future quality of our favorite shows) are being threatened by the looming specter of AI-generated content and the hunger of big corporations to cut every single job they possibly can to maximize profits.
The companies' behavior has created a gig economy inside a union work force, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing, the Writers Guild of America said in a statement.
CEO compensation last year averaged roughly $32 million at the industry’s 12 major media companies. It's obvious these juggernauts can afford to properly compensate their writers. If they won't, then writers should continue to strike until they receive a fair contract.
Support striking WGA writers by donating your time and/or money! You can write letters of support, donate to the Snacklist (which delivers food and coffee to striking writers), share their demands online using the WGA social media toolkit (#WGAstrong, #WGAstrike), or — if you’re in LA or New York City — join them on the frontlines!
