My name is Emily Busch, and I’m a Democrat running for Congress in Michigan’s 10th District.

On November 30, 2021, my son, Andrew, ran for his life from a school shooter. Andrew was in music class at Oxford High School that day when a 15-year-old with a gun opened fire on his classmates in the hallway, killing four and wounding seven. I was one of the lucky ones – my kid came home safe that day. But after such a horrific event in my own community, I knew I had to take action to protect our kids.

I saw my community plunged into grief, sadness, and anger. But this tragedy wasn’t unique to my community. Far too many in this country have experienced moments of horror just like this.

After every tragedy, communities are united in grief, but our leaders seem incapable of seeing past their own political calculations. Some, like our Congressman John James, offer up thoughts and prayers – and then refuse to take action, instead continuing to fill their campaign coffers with money from the gun lobby. Washington fails over and over to end the threat of school shootings, which is why I’m stepping up and running for Congress – to ensure Michigan and our nation have a leader who will take action.
