CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS

OCA - San Mateo Chapter
Community Service Day of Healing - June 17,2023 Saturday 10-12 noon

On June 17, about 75 SMOCA members, youth, and friends, together with Self Help for the Elderly senior, folded 1000 cranes for the Art Installation Project to be donated and displayed at the Half Moon Bay Library in remembrance of gun violence victims. Local organizations participated by donating origami paper and snacks. Mental health resources and Asian American books were available for perusing. We will fold more cranes and are now in the process of stringing the cranes together. All are welcome to the "Crane Stringing Party" on 7/9/2023 from 1:30-4:30pm in Menlo Park, CA.

OCA - Tucson Chapter
Greater Tucson’s OCA 50th Anniversary Gala took place on June 10th at Viscount Suites Conference Center. President Linda Ng gave the keynote, highlighting OCA’s mission and national programs supporting advocacy issues that figure large today, including anti-Asian violence, civic engagement, leadership development, inclusion of AANHPI curriculum in K-12, diminishing the digital divide, access to higher eduction and health care, and family reunification. Distinguished guests included Senator Jaime Gutierrez (ret.); Barry Wong, Executive Director Governor Ducey’s Office of Equal Opportunity, Linda Gutierrez Chair Emeritus Hispanic Women’s Corporation, and Victor Bowleg, President League of Women Voters Greater Tucson. Local partners, such as League of Women Voters Greater Tucson, Raytheon ASPIRES, and YWCA of Southern Arizona attended the celebration. The evening featured youth achievement with shoutouts to Mariachi Aztlán Pueblo High School; Eden Bae, photographer, U of Arizona ’27; and Lady
Elli, College Leadership Hero, U. of Arizona, ’23. Besides mariachi, entertainment was provided by Siva Maia Polynesian Dancers, Shu ching Cheng, pianist, and Duochinoiserie Xia Jing and Hu Bin, which made for a multicultural Latino-AANHPI experience.

OCA - Greater Los Angeles Chapter
On June 15, OCA-Greater LA hosted a special community screening of "American Born Chinese," the new hit show on Disney+. The screening was to a maxed-out audience of 200 attendees. An engaging, insightful, amusing, and award-winning panel followed, featuring actor Yeo Yann Yann and cartoonist, graphic novelist, and executive producer Gene Luen Yang. Filmmaker and UCLA professor Renee Tajima-Pena moderated the panel. Many, many thanks to Bill Imada and IW Group for organizing the incredible event, as well as to co-hosts the UCLA Asian American Studies Department, Center for Scholars and Storytellers, and Japanese American National Museum.

OCA - Greater Cleveland Chapter

As part of a nationwide OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates Community Day of Service, our chapter partnered with BigHearted Blooms for a heartwarming initiative to spread joy and uplift the elders in AsiaTown. During the event, OCAGC members made over 70 flower arrangements, which were then delivered to Asian Evergreen Apartments and St. Clair Place Apartments. The recipients of these beautiful bouquets were the elder Asian community residing at Asian Evergreen Apartments and St. Clair Place. The delivery of the flowers brought immense joy and excitement to the recipients, who eagerly chose their own arrangements. The faces of the seniors lit up with happiness and gratitude as they received these thoughtful gestures.

8/13 Meet the Film Maker of "Jeweled Bird" by OCA - San Mateo Chapter
Carol Lee Hall is a local San Francisco Bay Area film maker who, along with her creative team in Los Angeles, is in the final process of making a blockbuster feature length fictionalized movie based on historical facts that occurred in SF Chinatown during the late 19th century. The story revolves around the lives of young Chinese girls who were sold into slavery in Chinatown but freed with the help of a Presbyterian missionary, Donaldina Cameron and the brave Chinese women during the time of unjust exclusionary laws against Chinese barring their legal entry into the US. The movie highlights the ongoing problem of human trafficking even today. It offers today's generation of young women and leaders hope that the power of one individual can indeed make a difference in the lives of many.
