Dear John,
President Biden is moving ahead with his series of radical nominees. Like Nancy Abudu and Julie Rikelman, Loren AliKhan (nominated to be a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia) has consistently shown a clear disregard for the rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution--in AliKhan's case, the right to freedom of religion. She is expected to receive a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee later this month.
Will you send a message to your senators urging them to vote NO on AliKhan's nomination?
In Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, AliKhan argued against houses of worship being free to hire their ministers as they see fit. In ruling unanimously (9-0) for houses of worship, the Supreme Court called her position "untenable" and "hard to square with the text of the First Amendment, which gives special solicitude to the rights of religious organizations."
This is just one of the five instances in which AliKhan has actively fought against protecting Americans' religious freedom. During her confirmation hearing in early June, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) called out AliKhan on another. She defended D.C.'s prohibition of church services while the mayor not only condoned but attended protest rallies during the pandemic. This video of that interaction shows how AliKhan failed to explain the positions she has taken against religious freedom.
Reach out to your senators now and tell them to oppose AliKhan's nomination to the federal bench!
AliKhan's consistent disregard for our "first freedom" demonstrates her anti-religious bias, making her unsuitable to serve on the federal bench where she would adjudicate cases like these for years to come.
Sincerely,
