LATIN AMERICA
Latindadd released a statement about the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact and the Bridgetown Initiative, which the organisation classified as “disappointing” and “far from expectations”. The organisation also published an article about the process towards establishing a UN Tax Convention, theme discussed in an online event promoted with Red de Justicia Fiscal de América Latina y El Caribe (RJFALC).
AFRICA
Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) hosted a side event at the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) 2023 Global Conference in Dakar (Senegal) to discuss strategies to optimise tax revenue collection from transition minerals by African governments. They also announced a podcast series unpacking Kenya’s double taxation agreements.
ASIA
Tax and Fiscal Justice Asia (TAFJA) and the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) called for wealth taxes during their #8for8 campaign. The organisations also coordinated mobilisations in several countries in Asia demanding reparations and calling out the Global North on their responsibility towards the Global South, during the Paris Summit for a New Global Financial Pact.
NORTH AMERICA
Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF) celebrated that the House of Commons committee studying food price inflation in the country recommended a windfall tax on large corporations. The FACT Coalition highlighted how the pressure for tax transparency keeps gaining support in the U.S., as demands from investors led shareholders to vote on resolutions calling for multinational giants to begin reporting tax and other data for each country where they operate.
EUROPE
Eurodad organised a two-day conference in Brussels (Belgium) to debate how civil society can challenge false solutions being presented to address urgent global crises involving tax, debt, aid, development finance and climate change. They also shared an analysis about the Paris Summit for a New Global Financial Pact.
