John,
The Green New Deal is back and there has never been a better time for it!
Re-introduced by Senator Ed Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Green New Deal will mobilize the economy over the next ten years to address climate change through investments in clean energy and creating millions of new, high-paying jobs.
As Senator Markey remarked, since the bill’s initial introduction four years ago, the political climate around climate change has changed, bringing action “to the top of the national agenda.” The bill makes environmental justice a focal point, bringing the benefits of infrastructure investment to historically underserved communities.
Endorsed by Al Gore, Naomi Klein, the Sierra Club, and dozens of labor, environmental, and racial justice organizations, the Green New Deal recognizes it is time to evolve beyond over two hundred years of coal-burning dirty energy and to drive our economy with clean, renewable forms.
Show your support to the bill’s sponsors by signing this petition that will be delivered directly to the offices of Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez!
What are the main points of the Green New Deal? The bill takes a multi-pronged approach to transform our economy over the next ten years, taking care to ensure that the benefits will be shared across all segments of society, not just concentrated among wealthy investors.
100% Clean Energy: Moving off fossil fuels that create greenhouse gasses, the Green New Deal calls for a transition to 100% clean, renewable energy sources over the next ten years. These include wind, solar, and geothermal power.
Infrastructure: Major upgrades to the energy grid, expanding public transportation, and making buildings more energy-efficient will move our infrastructure firmly into the 21st century.
Jobs and Economic Growth: High paying union jobs will be created in such sectors as construction, manufacturing, and renewable energy, with a focus on providing opportunities in historically marginalized communities.
Social Justice: Low income, minority, and Indigenous communities will share in the opportunities and the benefits of the transition to clean energy.
Sustainable Agriculture: The promulgation of soil health and reduced greenhouse gas emissions are among the benefits of the Green New Deal. Healthy soil functions over the long term as a living ecosystem for plants, animals, and humans to thrive. Bountiful crops, healthy air and water, productive grazing, and diverse wildlife, are among its benefits.
Research and Development: To keep looking toward the future, substantial investment in research and development will help create new technologies to make further improvements possible.
Now is the time for the Green New Deal! Can we count on you to show your support with your petition signature today?
Thank you for being part of the upcoming transformation of the American economy!
