Despite Small Improvements, State Supreme Courts Remain Unrepresentative ([link removed])
By Devon Hesano
Here are some recent updates you may have missed.
* In a victory for voters, a federal judge blocked ([link removed]) portions of Florida's new omnibus voter suppression law Senate Bill 7050 ([link removed]) as litigation continues. The judge wrote: "This case arises from Florida’s latest assault on the right to vote."
* A conservative group, Minnesota Voters Alliance, filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit challenging Minnesota's new law that restored voting rights to more than 50,000 people with prior felony convictions. The group argues that the law violates the state constitution and asks a court to block its enforcement.
* A federal judge dismissed ([link removed]) a conspiracy-filled lawsuit in Oregon that sought to dismantle the state's mail-in voting system and prohibit electronic vote tabulators from being used in any election. Republicans who brought the lawsuit have already appealed the decision.
* A prominent Nevada Republican with "significant ties" to the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit ([link removed]) challenging a new law, which is designed to protect election officials from intimidation, harassment and election interference.
Here’s what to expect coming up.
* Tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. EDT, there will be a hearing of an appeal in a state-level lawsuit ([link removed]) challenging a Mississippi bill that creates a new court with unelected judges in the majority-Black capital of Jackson. Plaintiffs argue that the bill violates voters' constitutional rights.
