John, today in Manchester, I gave a speech I hoped
I’d never have to give. To mark a date we hoped would never come.
Britain will leave the EU tomorrow.
Before we do, I want to
pay tribute to everything you have done. You have campaigned, marched
and fought for four years and built a nationwide movement. So
for everything you have done, thank you.
But
our European story doesn’t end tomorrow.
We
know that we are so much stronger working together, across borders, to
tackle the big issues - like the climate crisis and international
crime networks. Challenges we simply cannot tackle alone.
We know that there are many more battles to fight
too. We may be leaving, but our future relationship with
Europe is far from decided.
We will keep on fighting to
prevent a no-deal Brexit and for the closest possible relationship
with the EU.
But the idea that Brexit will solve what’s wrong
with Britain will be revealed as fantasy soon enough.
For too many people, things aren’t working as they
should be. Too much wealth is in the hands of the already
wealthy. Too much power is in the hands of the already powerful.
We need a real plan, to make sure that if you work hard and
play by the rules, you can earn enough to get by, live in a decent
home and have the chance to live a happy, full and fulfilling life.
That’s what we’re fighting for. But to get there, we
need you with us.
Will you join the Liberal Democrats today
and help us build this future?
