Friends,
Monica and I are overjoyed to welcome Mateo Paul Kohli Riley into the world and into our lives. Mateo was delivered at 1:45 p.m. on June 27, weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces and measuring 20 inches. He has giant hands, long legs, and—we can already tell—a very big heart. Patricio quickly has taken to being the loving big brother we knew he'd be, showing and telling us often how much he loves "my baby."
The name "Mateo," which is the Spanish version of Matthew, honors Monica’s Latin American roots while reminding us of the Book of Matthew’s teachings to do unto others as you’d have done to you, to take the path less travelled, and to appreciate always the salt of the earth. They're lessons simple but profound in a world that often feels too divided, too desperate, and too scary--but more bright and promising to us now that Mateo has joined it.
Mateo’s middle name, Paul, honors both Monica's mom (Paulina) and my dad (Paul). Paulina was a fiercely loving, wildly curious, and eternally optimistic spirit. Though she passed away from cancer several years ago, her spirit lives on in Monica and no doubt is being passed to her grandsons as well.
My dad, Paul, truly is the salt of the earth. He taught me the value of hard work, the importance of humility, and most importantly, how strong a bond can be between a father and a son. I strive to be as good a dad to Patricio and Mateo as my dad has been to me.
I'm so proud of Monica for successfully navigating a high risk pregnancy with grace and strength. She's the toughest person I know. The boys and I look up to her now and always.
We’re so grateful for the love and support of friends and family--especially our own parents--and we can't wait for you to meet Mateo soon.
With gratitude & high hopes,
Josh & Monica
