** North East health bosses announced a £35m investment targeted at improving the health of some of our region's most deprived areas.
The money will back the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB)'s long-term strategy to tackle issues which mean our area suffers "the worst levels of preventable mortality" in the country.
The money will support a three-year programme which will seek to reduce the health issues caused by alcohol and smoking, provide new ways of caring for our mental health and support those waiting for surgery.
Dr Neil O'Brien, medical director for the ICB, said: "A strong, shared focus on these issues can make a real difference in people's lives. We've made great progress in areas like stroke, heart attacks and smoking, but we know there is much more to do’'
He went on to say "It's all part of our vision for Better Health and Wellbeing for All, with a focus on longer and healthier lives for all our people, regardless of what they earn or where they live. This programme is an important step towards tackling those difficult long-term issues."
Dr Claire Sullivan, deputy director of the Government's Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), said: "This shows a real commitment by the NHS to reduce inequality and prevent ill health.''

** Smokers could be offered vapes to help them quit cigarettes as part of a trial being proposed in Peterborough.
The one-year pilot program would see smokers being given vapes as part of a structured attempt to give up smoking in order to test whether it helps improve success rates.
Vapes, which contain nicotine but not tar or tobacco, are “probably less harmful than cigarettes”, a report recommending the trial produced by Peterborough City Council (PCC) and the region’s Integrated Care Board (ICB) says.
But while vaping may be encouraged among adult smokers in future, it will be more heavily discouraged among children and teenagers.
PCC and the ICB also propose to expand the region’s school-based programmes that address smoking and vaping – which is becoming more prevalent.
Smoking costs Peterborough £72.5m per year, the report says, spread across health and social care services as well as lost productivity.

Residents of 12 states in the South and Midwest are more likely to smoke – and to smoke more – than people living in the rest of the United States, according to a new report.
This group of states is home to about 21% of the US population but 28% of smokers in the country.
According to Truth Initiative, much of the disparity can be attributed to weaker local policy on tobacco prevention and cessation, particularly due to industry influence and lack of political will from decision-makers.
The latest report from Truth Initiative, published last week, also shows that people in these 12 states who smoke tend to do so significantly more than smokers in other states.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the US. Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke causes premature death for nearly half a million people each year, and millions more live with a serious illness caused by smoking.
Life expectancy is about three years lower in the 12 states where smoking is more common than it is in the rest of the country, according to the new report – about 76 years compared with 79 years.
“We owe it to all those who live in these states to take strong actions to close these geographic disparities and give them a fighting chance for a healthy, smoke-free life,” Schillo said.
