Today is a celebration of our nation’s independence.

It’s the day we came together, as one country, to declare that we Americans would no longer be governed by the unelected elites of an overseas imperial power.

It’s the day we came together to declare that we Americans — not a king, and not the wealthy aristocrats around him — would be in charge of our own destiny, our own commerce, our own productiveness, and our own country.

It’s the day we came together to declare that we Americans — endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights — would chart a new course of freedom for ourselves, for our families, and for the whole world to watch.

And the best part? We did it. We secured our country’s freedom when no one thought we could, and we haven’t looked back.

As Blue Dogs we think that’s something worth celebrating every summer — with a good BBQ and a big, loud fireworks show. But us Blue Dogs also take the freedoms countless Americans have fought and died for seriously. We believe it’s our duty to continue charting a course of freedom for our kids and our grandkids, and for all Americans who are alive today.

So today, we wanted to share what freedom means for us:

Freedom is the opportunity to choose a path in life that best fits with the talents, ambitions, and interests you have.

Freedom is the opportunity to choose not to follow the path everyone else is taking, or that others have chosen for you.

Freedom is when working hard and playing by the rules can get you somewhere in life, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that along the way.

Freedom is the ability to practice your faith and worship with your community without fear or danger.

Freedom is you and your family feeling safe in your own home, knowing you can protect yourself and your children, and knowing that help is only a phone call away.

Freedom is being able to fix the stuff you own.

So this Fourth of July, we wanted to celebrate what America means to us. And we’re asking you to join us helping fight for these freedoms and more.
