Happy Fourth of July! I hope that you are able to celebrate and enjoy this Independence Day with friends and family.
On days like today, I think of those serving our country in uniform who won’t be able to rest, relax, and spend time with their families—the sacrifices they make every single day to ensure our safety and security is awe-inspiring. My grandfather served in WWII, and he spoke often about the ideals of democracy and freedom that defined America and our founding. We owe every service member a profound debt for the freedoms we celebrate today, and every day.
It is this idea of American freedom that we should reflect more deeply on, as a nation: freedom must mean more than simply doing what one wants; we are not truly free until everyone can participate in the American Dream, in a fair system that rewards hard work and affords opportunity to all. We have to continue working to meet the aspirations envisioned by the Founders when they declared America’s independence from an oppressive monarchy that glorified a single individual above the common good. Together, we can fight for this vision of democracy and a more perfect union—for everyone who seeks life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in this incredible country.
