Happy Independence Day.
247 years ago, the Second Continental Congress gathered at Independence Hall on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia and approved the Declaration of Independence. With its adoption, the body solidified a commitment to fundamental democratic ideals that would make America a beacon of hope in the world.
America is not just a country — it's a promise. Generation after generation, we have fought to fulfill that promise, from the great victories of the civil rights movement to our fellow Americans who put their lives on the line and died to defend our sacred rights and freedoms.
But the fight is not over. The Nation we celebrate on July 4th is one where we believe that every person is created equal and has inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness – and we still have work to do to make our country live up to the ideals enshrined in that great Declaration.
Today, we hope your celebration is filled with family, fun, and fireworks.
