This country has blessed me with countless opportunities. As the proud daughter of a factory worker and public-school teacher, I cherish what America has bestowed upon me, and I vow to continue fighting for the rights we all hold most dear.

As you spend time today enjoying cookouts with family and friends, take time to appreciate how far we’ve come since the founding of our great nation, and recognize how much farther we need to go in our pursuit for liberty, justice, and true equality.

The first African-American woman in Wisconsin history to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, took her official oath of office on

January 4, 2005. She served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1993-2004. Before her

election to the Senate, Congresswoman Moore served two consecutive terms in the

Wisconsin State Assembly from 1989-92.
