[link removed] [[link removed]] 247 years ago today, the United States took the first, tottering steps toward democracy with the Declaration of Independence.

A group of people had a pretty crazy idea. What if humans could govern themselves? What if we didn’t need to pledge allegiance to a ruler, but to each other and ourselves and the idea that we had the right to live, be free, and pursue happiness?

It was unheard of.

It was also violently conflicting with the realities of their daily lives and the lives of millions of people who lived without rights, within bondage, or with threat of genocide.

That’s because the people who had these ideas and the power to work toward them were also wealthy, white, land-owning men. And they didn’t bother including anyone else in their ideas of liberty and freedom.

But the idea itself was universal and contagious.

That government should be responsive and responsible to the people.
That all human beings deserve to live lives of dignity.
That tyranny should be eradicated in all its forms.

Their goals were lofty and imperfect, and we have spent the last 247 years moving closer and closer to making it a reality for ALL Americans. We still have some distance to go.

The American project is an ongoing effort to make our nation realize its full promise and ensure no one is left behind. Because our liberties must be all-encompassing if they are to mean anything.

We will keep striving and keep pushing until our highest ideals match our reality.

That’s what this movement is all about: making the American Dream a reality, for everyone.

Happy Fourth of July!

– Monica
