Fellow Democrats, Happy Independence Day!
Two hundred and forty-seven years ago, Congress and the Founding Fathers declared our independence from the British Monarchy, beginning the great experiment of American Democracy that continues today.
As recent years have made all too clear, the work to protect and better that democracy is ongoing. It is up to each and every one of us to safeguard the principles that make our nation great: the principles of justice, liberty, and equality.
While we enjoy the fireworks, parades, and barbecues that mark this special day, let us hold in our hearts the shared values that unite us as Americans. Let us celebrate not just the past but also the American promise of a brighter future for all. Together, we can continue to make our great nation a beacon of hope, opportunity, and progress.
