Hi John,

I wanted to reach out today to wish you and your family a safe and happy Independence Day.

The Fourth of July marks the ratification of the Declaration of Independence and the beginning of our country’s great struggle for the universal rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I was honored to defend those values when I served in the military, and I am just as honored to defend them in Congress, John.

And in Congress, I’m up against far-right politicians who often try to cloak their conspiracies, hatred, and servitude to the ultra-rich in the red, white, and blue. This Independence Day, Americans everywhere should reject the far-right claim to own the flag and once again put our common good first, grounded in patriotism and a love of country.

It’s been a long journey over the past 247 years, and this day allows us time to reflect on just how far we’ve come – and how far we still have to go to live up to our values. The fight for our common good lives on, and I’m honored to fight it alongside you.
