John,

There’s something uniquely hopeful about a nation founded on liberty and democracy and about the promise of a nation where all of us have the opportunity to pursue a better life.

On July 4th, we honor that promise and the work of our forebearers at the same time we also recognize that their notions of liberty and democracy did not include all of us.

Over time and after much struggle, we’ve made great strides towards expanding those notions, but we still have further to go. Together, I know we can create a better and brighter future for all Americans, regardless of who we are.

That’s the fight I’m committed to now and always.
