Happy Fourth of July, Johh!
As we celebrate another anniversary of the day our country declared its independence, I wanted to reach out and talk about what today means to me.
On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress of the United States formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. The first line of the second paragraph of this document holds that it is a truth self-evident that all men are created equal. Yet, at that time, it was not believed that women, people of color, Native Americans, and other marginalized groups deserved to live in society as equals.
Our history as Americans is laden with injustices, and as time progresses, we should not strive to turn back the clock on the strides we've taken to move forward. We can and we MUST do better.
Securing the right to choice in reproductive healthcare, protecting LGBTQIA+ Americans, and working toward racial justice are all ways we can work towards a future where we can all be equal.
Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Fourth of July!
Thank you,
Diana
