John,
As people across the United States claim to support freedom this July 4th, we can’t forget that right-wing lawmakers and judges have been trying to take away our fundamental rights. They’ve escalated fascist attacks on our democracy and our most basic freedom to make choices about our own bodies.
Last year, the unelected and undemocratic Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. And for decades before that, the racist Hyde Amendment has blocked abortion access for low-income people, Native communities, and LGBTQ+ people (who often rely on federally funded healthcare).
So as part of creating a truly just and democratic country, we must not only restore Roe v. Wade’s legal protections, but expand access to abortions to ensure that every single person—regardless of their income, zip code, or skin color—has the freedom to make decisions about their own body.
That’s why I’m proud to support my sister-in-service Ayanna Pressley’s bill, the Abortion Justice Act. This legislation would center marginalized communities’ needs and ensure that everyone who seeks abortion care can receive it, without stigma, shame, or systemic barriers.
Please add your name to support the Abortion Justice Act. Protect our reproductive freedom this July 4th as part of building a true multiracial democracy.
This is an urgent fight. Republicans in Congress are pursuing a nationwide abortion ban, and many Republican state legislatures have restricted or banned abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade a year ago. These attacks on our rights most harm Black, brown, Indigenous, low-wealth, and LGBTQ+ people.
I promise to keep fighting for our rights, including our right to bodily sovereignty and reproductive justice. That work includes founding and leading the Mamas’ Caucus in Congress, in partnership with Mothering Justice, to center and advocate for mothers of color and their families.
Mothers of color face unjust maternal and infant health disparities along with economic disparities, and are leaders in the fight for reproductive justice and policies such as affordable childcare and paid leave.
I’m proud to partner with grassroots leaders, and we won’t stop fighting until we achieve reproductive justice, freedom, and a true democracy for all.
This July 4th, join us in the fight for reproductive freedom and a true multiracial democracy that works for everyone, by signing the petition in support of the Abortion Justice Act.
In solidarity,
Rashida
