One year ago today, in Highland Park, IL, seven people were killed and 48 more were injured by a gunman armed with an assault weapon. We're calling on 25,000 gun safety activists to raise their voices and respond to our live poll before it closes at midnight tonight:

Should Congress ban assault weapons?

John, today, millions of Americans will head to parades and barbecues to celebrate freedom. But the truth of the matter is that our country is not free – not when gun violence continues to ravage communities and our children live in fear.

One year ago, the community of Highland Park, IL, came together for their annual Fourth of July parade, and a gunman on a nearby rooftop fired more than 80 shots into the crowd, killing seven people and injuring 48 others. He was armed with a weapon meant to kill as many people as quickly as possible: an assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine.

The damage done by this gunman is irreversible. Families will never get their loved ones back. The 2-year-old found wandering alone will never have his parents back. And the 48 people who were injured will carry their wounds, physical and mental, for the rest of their lives.

The Highland Park shooting was the 313th shooting of 2022. There have been more than 650 mass shootings since then.

We're locked in a cycle of violence and of death. And we're going to find ourselves going through the same motions of shock, horror, grief, and loss until we do something about it. And, John, it is possible to create a world where we're all free from gun violence. Legislators in Illinois passed an assault weapons ban after the Highland Park shooting because these bans are proven to work. It’s time for Congress to follow suit and act in the interest of all Americans’ safety.

That's why we're calling on 25,000 activists to demand that Congress finally take action to end gun violence by passing an assault weapons ban. Please, will you join us in remembering the victims of the Highland Park shooting by responding to our survey before midnight tonight?
