Happy Fourth of July, friend.

I’m hoping that, like me, you’re able to spend some time in the sun with your loved ones.

Today, I’m thinking a lot about those words we hear every July Fourth: freedom, justice, equality. Those are values that I and every American strive to live, and the same ones I try to teach to my kids. 

But lately, my mind can’t help but go to those who have made it their career to attack those who would live their life authentically, to strip away a woman’s right to make her own choices, or to stifle participation in our democracy itself. So many Americans are being denied those basic values on which our country was founded. 

But if Americans know how to do one thing, it’s to stand up to injustice. Our heroes like John Lewis and Opal Lee believed that they could make a change, and they brought us closer to a more perfect union. And right now, millions of Americans, like you and this team, are continuing that same fight for our guiding principles. When we see injustice and inequality, we act. That gives me so much hope – and it’s the most American thing I can think of.

I’m so grateful to share this day with you. Thanks for being a part of this fight with me.
