On July 4, 1776, our founding fathers signed their names to the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims we are all created equal and have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

From that day forward, Americans have remained dedicated to protecting those rights and our country has served as a democratic example for the rest of the world.

As we celebrate Independence Day with family and friends, I encourage you to reflect on how far we have come as a republic. Though at times we may feel our differences outweigh our similarities, let us always remember the value of living in a country where we are each free to express our own ideas and pursue our own individual American dreams.

Most importantly, may we always thank and pay respect to the men and women of our armed forces, who protect our freedoms at home and abroad.

From my family to yours, I wish you a very happy Independence Day!
