I want to wish you and your loved ones a safe and Happy Fourth of July! Today is a reminder that our democracy is a promise of freedom and justice for all.

When our forefathers declared independence from the British monarchy, they had a vision for a nation that was built by and for the people. We the people have the power to shape our government so that it works for us.

Black and brown Americans have been fighting for a more perfect union since before our nation was born. From the Underground Railroad and the Freedom Riders to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests and the Black Lives Matter movement — we need to continue resisting and organizing until our nation fulfills its promise of liberty and justice for ALL Americans.

We aren't there yet, but today I am hopeful. I am proud to be serving our community in Congress, and I know America's best days are still ahead of us if we keep marching forward together.
