On this day 247 years ago, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the 13 American colonies independent from British rule.

Since our founding, the inalienable right to pursue freedom, equality, liberty, and happiness has guided the people of the United States to a more perfect union. Sadly, nearly two and a half centuries later, that pursuit is under attack from the right-wing fringe of our society.

Democrats in Congress and here in Connecticut are fighting for your freedoms:

• The freedom to vote in open and fair elections
• The freedom to bodily autonomy
• The freedom to read what you want to read
• The freedom to live without the fear of gun violence
• The freedom to access affordable healthcare and more.

Let today be a reminder of how far we’ve come, that freedom must be defended, and that the fight to maintain and expand the rights so eloquently defined in the Declaration of Independence goes on.

We hope you and your loved ones enjoy our nation’s special day.
