On July 4, 1776, after two days of debate, amidst the already raging American Revolutionary War, the Second Continental Congress voted to approve and adopt the final version of the Declaration of Independence.

The Fourth of July.

American Independence.

It is everything our founding fathers worked so diligently to manifest. There’s nothing more uniquely American than standing strong in the face of insurmountable odds, overcoming those odds, and then, establishing yourself as the most powerful country in the world.  The Fourth of July is the day where we celebrate American perseverance and excellence.  When asked how American Independence should be remembered, John Adams said, “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.”

Whether it’s baseball, fireworks, cookouts, or pool parties, we are celebrating just as our founders would have wanted, embracing the exuberance of freedom.  The freedom to speak our minds.  The freedom to worship our Creator.  The freedom to protect ourselves from tyranny.  We have a duty, as Americans, to share these freedoms with future generations.  American Independence is not a 247 year old concept.  It’s an enduring concept, one that must be continually cultivated, so as to never take it for granted.

In closing, I will leave you with the words of perhaps the most famous signatory to the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock, “Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual.  Continue steadfast and, with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us.”

May God bless each of you this Fourth of July, and above all, may God bless these United States of America.
